Editorial: Free Will or . . . ?

Truth and Freedom . . . Lies and Bondage! That was the topic of my last editorial.
Truth vs. lies undergirds another crucial topic, and that is free will. To Seventh-day Adventists, the concept seems so obvious, so undisputed, that we hardly even think about it. We are some of the foremost champions of the “Great Controversy” worldview (the idea of a cosmic war between God and Satan, between good and evil). That intrinsically involves freedom of choice—otherwise there could be no evil!
However, modern (even secular) culture has bought heavily into the ideological framework of everything which happens is “meant to be” or “not meant to be”—an allusion (though perhaps loosely) to everything being predetermined.
I wonder how this has affected us as Adventists?? Are we still crystal clear in our thinking regarding this seismic topic of free will vs. God’s sovereignty? Because it’s not just theology—how we view this topic has serious implications. . . (next time!).
