One of the questions we have been asking at the Billings Seventh-day Adventist Church is simple:

What if our facilities are not merely buildings we maintain, but ministry resources God has entrusted to us for the blessing of our community?

Like many churches, we are blessed with a large campus, ample parking, and facilities capable of hosting a variety of events. Traditionally, churches often think about how these resources can support ministries operated by the church itself. 

While those ministries remain important, our leadership has begun asking an additional question:

What is God already doing in our community, and how can we support it?

This shift in perspective has opened doors to new relationships and opportunities. Rather than feeling responsible to create every ministry ourselves, we are exploring ways to partner with organizations, groups, and individuals who are already serving our community well.

In recent months, our campus has hosted community clothing exchanges, provided space for fundraisers, and welcomed conversations about health screenings and other community-focused events. Additional partnerships are already being explored as community organizations discover that our facilities may help them accomplish their mission more effectively.

These opportunities are about more than sharing space. They create opportunities for relationships. Church members meet community leaders. Volunteers connect with neighbors. Conversations develop naturally. Trust grows. The church becomes known not only as a place where people worship on Sabbath, but also as a place that cares about the well-being of the community throughout the week.

This approach has also reminded us of an important stewardship principle. Not every need requires us to create a new ministry. Sometimes ministry begins by recognizing what God is already doing around us and offering our support.

Our goal is not simply to fill a calendar with events. Our goal is to create an environment where people can experience the love of Christ through practical acts of service, hospitality, and partnership.

As we continue to explore new opportunities, we are encouraged by the growing number of conversations taking place. Community organizations are finding a welcoming partner. Church members are finding new avenues for service. And our campus is increasingly becoming what we believe God intended it to be: a resource for ministry, a place of hospitality, and a blessing to our community.

After all, the church is never most effective when its doors remain closed. It is most effective when the gifts God has entrusted to it are shared generously for the good of others and the glory of Christ.
